Find the statutory minimum vacation time for your province, territory or federally regulated workplace. Select your jurisdiction and enter your completed years of continuous service to see the applicable vacation tier.
Calculate minimum vacation entitlement
This calculates statutory vacation time, not vacation pay in dollars.
General information only. Employment standards contain eligibility, reference-year, occupation and industry exceptions. An employment contract or collective agreement may provide more generous vacation.
Vacation entitlement by province and territory in Canada
There is no single provincial vacation entitlement that applies to every Canadian employee. Provincial and territorial employment standards set their own minimum vacation rules, while employees in federally regulated industries are generally covered by the Canada Labour Code.
| Jurisdiction | Initial annual tier | Higher tier | Long-service tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | 2 weeks | 3 weeks at 5+ years | — |
| British Columbia | 2 weeks | 3 weeks at 5+ years | — |
| Alberta | 2 weeks | 3 weeks at 5+ years | — |
| Quebec Earlier threshold | 2 weeks after 1 year | 3 weeks at 3+ years | — |
| Saskatchewan 4-week tier | 3 weeks | — | 4 weeks at 10+ years |
| Manitoba | 2 weeks | 3 weeks after 5 years | — |
| New Brunswick | 2 weeks | 3 weeks at 8+ years | — |
| Nova Scotia | 2 weeks | 3 weeks after 8 years | — |
| Prince Edward Island | 2 weeks | 3 weeks after 5 years | — |
| Newfoundland & Labrador | 2 weeks | 3 weeks at 15+ years | — |
| Yukon | 2 weeks | — | — |
| Northwest Territories | 2 weeks | 3 weeks after 5 years | — |
| Nunavut | 2 weeks | 3 weeks following first 5 years | — |
| Federal 3 tiers | 2 weeks at 1+ year | 3 weeks at 5+ years | 4 weeks at 10+ years |
These are statutory minimums. Your contract, workplace policy or collective agreement can give you more vacation than the minimum employment standard.
How the Canada vacation entitlement calculator works
The calculator uses two inputs: your employment jurisdiction and your completed continuous service with the same employer. It then matches that service period against the minimum annual vacation tiers for the selected jurisdiction.
Why completed service matters
A statutory tier usually changes only once the required period of service has been completed. This is why entering 4.5 years and 5 years can produce different results in jurisdictions with a five-year threshold.
The calculator shows the legal floor
It does not reduce an employer-provided benefit. If your employment contract already gives you 4 weeks while the statutory minimum is 2 weeks, your contractual benefit may remain the relevant entitlement.
What if you have worked for less than one year?
This is where vacation entitlement calculators can easily become misleading. Vacation pay can begin accumulating before the worker has completed the service period required to take a full statutory annual vacation.
Quebec is particularly important because its legislation provides a specific less-than-one-year vacation calculation based on completed months of uninterrupted service, subject to its statutory maximum.
Canada vacation entitlement examples
The employee has passed Ontario’s 5-year threshold, so the statutory annual vacation minimum is 3 weeks.
Quebec reaches the 3-week tier earlier than many other provinces, at the 3-year service point.
Saskatchewan’s entitlement is not capped at 3 weeks: after 10 years, the statutory minimum becomes 4 weeks.
A federally regulated employee who has completed 10 years reaches the Canada Labour Code’s 4-week tier.
Ten years does not yet reach this province’s higher statutory tier. The minimum remains 2 weeks until the 15-year threshold is met.
Yukon employment standards provide a minimum of 2 weeks per completed year; an employer may of course provide more.
Vacation entitlement vs vacation pay in Canada
These terms answer different questions.
- Vacation time is the minimum amount of time away from work that an eligible employee must receive.
- Vacation pay is the monetary amount associated with vacation and is usually calculated from eligible earnings under the applicable employment standard.
A percentage such as 4% or 6% should therefore not simply be presented as if it were the vacation-time entitlement itself.
If you want the monetary amount instead, use our Canada Vacation Pay Calculator.
Special cases that can change the answer
Federally regulated employees
Federal rules can apply instead of provincial employment standards. Examples can include employment in federally regulated banking, interprovincial transportation and certain telecommunications industries.
Part-time, casual and seasonal employees
Part-time status does not automatically mean no vacation rights. However, the way vacation time, service and vacation pay are applied can differ, particularly for seasonal or partial-year employment.
Collective agreements
Unionized workplaces may have vacation schedules that are considerably more generous than the statutory minimum.
Industry and occupation exemptions
Employment standards laws contain exclusions and special rules for some professions, occupations and industries. The calculator is designed for the ordinary statutory rules rather than every exemption.
Sale or transfer of a business
A transfer to another owner does not always reset employment service. Continuity provisions can preserve service in circumstances defined by the applicable employment standards legislation.
Common vacation entitlement mistakes
- ✕ Using Ontario’s rule for all of Canada. Vacation standards are jurisdiction-specific.
- ✕ Assuming Saskatchewan is permanently 3 weeks. Saskatchewan increases to a 4-week minimum after 10 years with the same employer.
- ✕ Missing Quebec’s earlier 3-week threshold. Quebec moves to 3 weeks at 3 years of uninterrupted service.
- ✕ Assuming a long-serving Newfoundland employee gets 3 weeks after 5 years. Newfoundland & Labrador uses a much later 15-year threshold.
- ✕ Confusing 4% vacation pay with 4 weeks of vacation. A percentage of earnings and a number of weeks are completely different measurements.
- ✕ Ignoring an employer’s better policy. Statutory standards are minimums, not maximums.

Canada vacation entitlement FAQs
How many vacation weeks are employees entitled to in Canada?
It depends on the employment jurisdiction and length of service. A common statutory structure is 2 weeks initially and 3 weeks after a service threshold, but several provinces and federal employment use different thresholds or additional tiers.
Is 2 weeks of vacation mandatory in Canada?
Two weeks is a common statutory annual minimum after the applicable qualifying period, but it is not the complete rule for every jurisdiction. Saskatchewan starts with a higher annual minimum, while some long-service employees can qualify for 3 or 4 weeks.
When do employees get 3 weeks of vacation?
The threshold varies. Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta use a 5-year threshold, while Quebec reaches 3 weeks at 3 years. Other jurisdictions can use later thresholds.
Can an employee get 4 weeks of statutory vacation?
Yes. Federally regulated employees are entitled to at least 4 weeks after 10 consecutive years with the same employer. Saskatchewan also provides a 4-week minimum after 10 years.
Does vacation entitlement increase after 5 years?
In several jurisdictions it does, but not everywhere. Always use the rule for the applicable province, territory or federal employment jurisdiction.
Does part-time work still qualify for vacation?
Part-time employees are generally covered by vacation standards, but eligibility, vacation-time scheduling and vacation-pay calculations can include jurisdiction-specific rules.
Is vacation pay the same as vacation entitlement?
No. Vacation entitlement describes time away from work. Vacation pay is the monetary amount payable under the applicable employment standard.
Can my employer give me more vacation than the calculator shows?
Yes. These figures are statutory minimums. Employment contracts, collective agreements and employer policies can provide more generous vacation benefits.
Which vacation law applies if I work for a federally regulated company?
Employees in federally regulated industries can fall under the Canada Labour Code rather than the employment standards law of the province or territory where they physically work.
